Unit Of Measurement - UOM

Item UOM

Unit of Measurement(UOM) is the unit used to measure the quantity of an item.

Example : We have a Coca-Cola 500ml can. The UOM is Piece/Count where a can is referred to as one Piece/Count irrespective of its weight/volume. Coca-Cola 500ml can be sold only in pieces.

Alternate UOM

Usually items are bought in pieces, weight, volume, case, carton, etc. UOM is used when items are bought and sold in same unit of measurement. Alternative UOM is used when items are bought in one UOM and sold in another UOM.

Example: 1 case of Coca Cola contains 24 cans. Bought as a Case and sold as a Piece. Here the UOM is Piece/Count and alternate UOM is Case. When 1 case is received, the inventory is added with 24 pieces.

Warning: UOM is applicable during sale and alternate UOM is used while receiving the stock through PO. That is, Coca Cola is bought in Case (alternate UOM) and can only be sold in Piece(UOM).
